Round up of the week
World
Builders in the Canadian city of Quebec have unearthed a live cannonball fired by the British in 1759 when they besieged Quebec while fighting the French at the Battle of the Plains of Abraham. The builders posed for photos with the 90kg shot unaware that it was still potentially explosive. Archaeologist Serge Rouleau, who examined the munition before the army noticed that it still contained a charge and said it was more of an incendiary bomb than a cannonball. A Senior munitions technician was quoted as saying, “The ball would break and the powder would ignite, setting fire to the building.
Seems as though the builders had a lucky escape.
London
A 31-year-old man has been stabbed to death by two attackers on a moped during an early-morning altercation in south-east London, police said.
The victim was fatally wounded during a clash in which shots were also fired in King William Walk in the centre of Greenwich
The assailants, both male, then fled the scene on the moped and emergency services arrived to find the man with stab injuries. Paramedics tried to revive the man but he was declared dead at the scene.
We seem to be seeing more crime from people on scooters/mopeds/bikes including an epidemic of bike theft with the perpetrators going out with machetes and other weapons. Every morning the first thing I do is check that my bike is where I parked it.
My world
This week my cousin’s 23-year-old daughter came from Wolverhampton to stay with me in London for a few days. Despite the big age gap, we get on incredibly well but then maybe that’s because I don’t act my age. Unfortunately, I had to work but Kat was able to go off and explore the city without me and we caught up in the evenings for pizza and prosecco.
Last week I mentioned that there was something potentially on the horizon for me which I couldn’t discuss this is still on the down low.
I’m ending the week with a family meal as we all catch up for my mum’s birthday.
My Word
I’ve been anxiously waiting while the editor slashes my book with her red pen but I should be out of my misery by the middle of next week as she returns the first edit. Or will I be in more misery lol.
I’ve been working on the spin off from ‘A Boy from the Streets’
I’ve also been thinking a bit more are a follow on from ‘As Dreams are Made on’ and after seeing a picture I wanted have had JC Clarke from The Graphics Shed design me a cover that has left me speechless. (I know right! Me speechless LOL)

My Review: Girls & Boys by M B Feeney

I was given an ARC copy of this in exchange for an honest review. Having read two other books by this author I was more than happy to do this. This is not the kind of book where you’ll find high drama but it is a gently paced story about Jack and his friend Andy and the life they lead in London after leaving their home. You will also meet Nina and Ruth who become friends when arriving in London. Their lives entwine with Jack and Andy’s and what follows is a story packed with LOL moments, love, betrayal and friendships. The pacing is perfect and the characters are so well written that I can picture them clearly. Everyone knows a Jack or an Andy. Another well-written book from an author who’s a natural. I look forward to reading Andy’s story in the near future.

Round up of the week
World More than two thousand refugees and migrants have been moved off the streets of Paris, where they have been sleeping rough for week.They were taken to temporary shelters in school gymnasiums on Friday morning. Hundreds of refugees and migrants had arrived in the Porte de la Chapelle area of Paris and were sleeping under road bridges and on the side of the road with almost no access to water, food or sanitation. This makes me realise just how lucky I am. London A heist took place Thursday night from the Masterpiece art fair in Chelsea which was swarming with security and staff in what has been likened to the infamous Pink Panther films. Gems up to £3 million were stolen with no apparent witnesses and no explanation of how or when. Can't help thinking it would make a great story although there are many such stories out there and maybe this one isn't for me. My World It has been quiet week but I do have an exciting potential opportunity (non-writing related) that I can’t mention yet until I find out whether it will pay off. I've just come back from a visit to my parents' house where I also caught up with my brother and nephew. Looking forward to a visit by my gorgeous cousin tomorrow. I've just finished reading Girls & Boys by M B Feeney which I can highly recommend. My review will be posted next week. I also finished the novella Laura's Locket by T M Lacoba, another great read. My Word I sent a sample of 'Is this Love?’ to the editor and happy with her I will be sending the full book to her on Monday. I have also continued writing the spin off story from A Boy from the Streets which follows the life of Carlos. I’m getting quite excited by this one. I received another 5* star review for A Boy from the Streets and was informed that I reduced the reader to tears. I must be doing something right. Catch you next week. Maria x

I will be releasing my first newsletter later this month which I am both excited and nervous about in equal measure. In the newsletter I will share excerpts from both my published works and my current work in progress book (WIP). Each month there will be a prize draw. Round up of the Week
World
A nineteen-year-old Minnesota woman has been charged over the fatal killing of her boyfriend. It was meant to be a social media stunt in an attempt to gain more followers. Pedro Ruiz held a book to his chest, thinking the bullet wouldn’t penetrate, while his girlfriend Monilisa Perez fired the shot in front of their three-year-old child and about thirty onlookers.
There are many things that can be said about this but I’m going to stick with asking this one question: How have we as a society got to the point where people think that something as extreme as this is a good way to get noticed?
London
Adele has cancelled her last two gigs at Wembley Stadium because of damage to her vocal chords in what she had already said could be her last tour.
My World
This Friday I attended Henley Regatta for a work’s event. It was interesting to attend especially as another experience which may help me one day in my writing but I found it on the whole to be a disappointment. You get to see about ten seconds at the most as the boats row passed, unless you are at the finish line I find it hard to see how you can get excited – but maybe that’s just me.
My Word
I have finally finished ‘Is this Love?’ and have spoken to a new editor. She has said that she will do a sample edit for me on Monday and if I am happy we can book in for 10th July. Excited and scared all at once. Sending your work to an editor is rather like letting someone root through your dirty laundry. As my usual editor is fully booked until next year I was forced to go elsewhere, so I am nervous to see if we jell.

Gentle-spirited People
This month’s blog is going to take a quick look at those people who have an inner beauty or gentleness of spirit. It is a rare quality and when you find someone with this trait they should be appreciated and cherished.
Other people will often view these folk as weak and are quick to take advantage of their good nature but the opposite is often the case. They have an underlying inner strength which they are either unaware of or choose not to shout out to the world. They are not boastful and in their gentle, consistent manner they go about their business. Yet when they need to they display strength and courage that should be appreciated and respected, when the chips are down and you need support it is these people who are often the first to offer it. Perceptive people will recognise their qualities but others will try to bulldoze them. I chose this subject today because I have such a character in my book “A Boy from the Streets.”
Christina is a loving Wife and Mother who allows her dominant husband to have his own way mainly because it is easier to do so, not because she is in fear of him because despite his disposition his bark is worse than his bite. She does it to please the man she loves. The one biggest regret she has is that she didn’t assert herself when her husband makes her choose between twin babies despite her protestations that she can look after both. She has lived with this regret her whole life and when the time comes to make amends twelves years later she shows her assertive side and her strength shines forth. Over the years she makes many more decisions in a more self-assured way which doesn’t deter from her beautiful spirit.
